About Date Masamune

Date Masamune (1567–1636) was one of the most famous samurai and daimyo of Japan's Sengoku period. He is widely known by his nickname, the “One-Eyed Dragon,” after losing the sight in his right eye following smallpox during childhood.

Masamune became a powerful leader in the Tohoku region and was known not only for his military abilities but also for his interest in trade and international relations. He encouraged foreign contact and supported the famous Keicho Embassy, sending Hasekura Tsunenaga on a diplomatic mission to Europe in the early 17th century.
