Dodanuki Masakuni is associated with a famous tradition of swordsmithing in Higo Province. Masakuni is said to have established his base in Dodanuki, Kikuchi, in what is now northern Kumamoto Prefecture.

The tradition is also connected with Kato Kiyomasa, a prominent retainer of the Toyotomi clan, who is traditionally said to have favored these sturdy blades.
