About Sakamoto Ryoma

Sakamoto Ryoma (1836–1867) was a prominent figure during the final years of Japan's Edo period and played an important role in the political changes that led to the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Ryoma became known for his political vision and his efforts to bring together rival domains. He was particularly instrumental in helping negotiate the Satsuma–Choshu Alliance, bringing two traditionally opposing domains together in opposition to the Tokugawa government.

Because of his political activities and opposition to the shogunate, Ryoma was forced to operate under dangerous circumstances and sometimes used an alias while traveling. His activities made him a target of forces loyal to the Tokugawa regime.

In 1867, Sakamoto Ryoma was assassinated at the Omiya Inn in Kyoto. His death came just months before the Tokugawa Shogunate formally ended, cementing his place in Japanese history as one of the influential figures of the Bakumatsu period.
