About Date Masamune

Date Masamune (1567–1636) was a powerful daimyo who ruled the Tohoku region of northern Japan during the late Sengoku and early Edo periods. He is one of Japan's most recognizable historical figures and is famously known as the “One-Eyed Dragon.”

Masamune lost the sight in his right eye after contracting smallpox during childhood. The exact circumstances surrounding the loss of the eye itself have been described differently in historical accounts and later traditions.

As a young daimyo, Masamune expanded the influence of the Date clan and established himself as a major power in northern Japan. Following the campaigns of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he submitted to Hideyoshi's authority and later served under the Tokugawa regime.

Masamune was also known for encouraging international trade and cultural exchange. He supported foreign contact and famously sponsored the Keicho Embassy, sending his retainer Hasekura Tsunenaga on a diplomatic mission to Europe in 1613.

The voyage traveled across the Pacific and Atlantic and eventually reached Spain and Rome, where the delegation sought diplomatic and trade relations and met with Pope Paul V.

Date Masamune's military reputation, distinctive appearance, political ability, and interest in international relations have made him one of the most fascinating figures of Japanese history.

Traditional Japanese Design

Japanese hand fans have a long history as both practical accessories and decorative works of art. Traditional fan designs often feature famous historical figures, nature, landscapes, calligraphy, and other elements of Japanese culture.

The Date Masamune design combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with the legacy of the famous “One-Eyed Dragon,” making this fan an appealing addition to a collection of Japanese art, samurai memorabilia, or Japanese-inspired décor.
