Despite the fact that Sanada had less men than that of his foe, he managed to put a large dent in the opposing army. Soon after taking control of the Takeda clan, he knew that he wanted to control the area around him, Shinano Province (modern-day Nagano Prefecture). When he was a child, smallpox took the sight in his right eye, though how he lost the actual eye itself, is left to different theories. Date Masamune ended up serving under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which he was really left no choice to do. Date also expanded trade in the Touhoku region and even encouraged foreigners to come to his lands. Due to the split of his large family, he had been tossed back and forth between the Imagawa clan and the Oda clan, not as a friend but as a hostage.
